In 2015, our Founder, Britney Tennant, published an essay in HSUS's Animal Sheltering Magazine titled Common Ground. In it, she argued that the language of the no-kill movement has created divisiveness and extremism. The time had come for animal welfare professionals and the communities who support them to look beyond no-kill for the future of our industry.

That future has arrived, in the form of Socially Conscious Sheltering, a common-sense and integrated community sheltering model. BDAR is proud to join the Socially Conscious Sheltering movement and has adopted its core principles as its own organizational values.

The fundamental goal of a Socially Conscious Animal Community is to create best outcomes for all animals.
