Isabelle post-surgery
We are happy to report that Isabelle's surgery went very well. Isabelle received two incisions, a couple screws into her ankle and sutures in the ligament surrounding it. There were also some bone and cartilage fragments removed. So far Isabelle is doing great! Her foster mom said she doesn't even act like the had surgery or is in any pain (it's probably that cute pink ladybug cast), and she has a hard time keeping Isabelle and her resident dog friend from playing too rough. Isabelle will require several rechecks and splint changes over the next few week. Hopefully in about 7 weeks she will be in better shape than she was before she came to BDAR, and ready to live her best life with her new mom. Isabelle's surgery took $3,000 from our medical fund. We have received less than half that in donations towards her care. Sweet, petite Isabelle came to BDAR from a partner shelter in mid December along with her four squishy two week old puppies. Isabelle was a wonderful mother, and did a fabulous job making those babies even squishier before they were old enough to be adopted to their own forever homes.

Early on, Isabelle's foster mom noticed she had a slight limp. By the first part of January it had gotten a little worse. She had xrays done, but they didn't show any noticeable injury. She was given pain meds and prescribed crate rest with the hope that would help her heal. By the time her babies were ready to move on, the swelling and pain in Isabelle's leg had gotten much worse. Eventually she was not bearing any weight on it at all. More X-rays were taken and still showed no signs of breaks or injury. At this time we decided to seek out a specialist.
After an hour long consult with our friends at Four Seasons Veterinary Specialists in Loveland, CO, they think she has a fracture in her ankle, along with some floating bone fragments, fluid and possibly a torn ligament as well. This means that sweet, sweet Isabelle stoicly cared for her babies despite being in obvious pain from an injury she came to us with.
Isabelle had to repair all the damage in that ankle, and in several weeks she will be leading a well deserved, pain-free life with her new mom - who is patiently waiting to make her adoption official!
This surgery will take a big chunk from our medical fund. Upwards of $3,000. Of course, Isabelle is worth every penny. But, we are hopeful that with your donations we can build that fund back up, so we are able to help the next dog like Isabelle that needs extra care. You can donate here.
