Started in 2009, Lambert's MuttNation Foundation is dedicated to finding safe and happy homes for rescue pets, and a big part of that mission involves helping the shelters that make pet adoption possible.

On Giving Tuesday (Dec. 1) 2020, MuttNation announced its expanded Share the Love program — a grant program open to anyone who adopted a pet from, fostered a pet through, or volunteered at an animal shelter in 2020. Animal lovers that applied for the program, nominated their local animal shelter to receive one of 15 MuttNation Foundation $1000 grants. Now, MuttNation is ready to announce the 15 winners just in time for Valentine's Day.

"Shelter pets and the people who care for them have the biggest hearts and sharing the love for Valentine's Day feels so right," Miranda Lambert said in a statement.

Over 14,000 participants took part in this year's Share the Love program — now in its third year — greatly eclipsing the number of registrants from prior years: 2,000 in 2019, and 500 in 2018.

"It's amazing to have such an overwhelming response to our program. The number of people who participated demonstrates the commitment and value that community members provide to their local shelters. And, especially given how difficult this year's been — it just means so much," Lambert added.

Here are the 15 recipients of the $1,000 MuttNation Share the Love grants.

Celebrating animals shelters and the volunteers who make their life-saving work possible has always been important to Lambert, who started volunteering with animals herself as a teen.

Now, Lambert is the mom to numerous rescue pets, including nine shelter dogs, and several rescue cats, rabbits, and horses.

"They're doing well!" Lambert told PEOPLE of her rescue pet posse.

"Delta, Cher, and Bellamy have been traveling with us on our recent airstream adventures," she said, referring to the road trips she has been taking with her husband Brendan McLoughlin.

The country star has also enjoyed her time at home with her animal family during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"My pets always help keep me grounded and help keep things in perspective," she added. "It's been nice to have some more time at home with all of them this past year. They make me smile!"

Lambert hopes that MuttNation's work and her own experiences with rescue animals inspire others to give pet adoption a chance.

"I would encourage people to be open-minded as they search for their dog. So many amazing dogs get overlooked because of stereotypes surrounding their mix of breeds," the "Settling Down" singer said "It can sometimes be harder for older dogs to get adopted, too. But the older ones are so loving, and many of them are trained already, so they can be great for first-time adopters. You can really make an impact on their life by giving them a second chance."

BDAR Receives $50,000 Gift

BDAR Receives $50,000 Gift

Black Dog Animal Rescue (BDAR), Wyoming’s leading Socially Conscious Animal Welfare Organization, is pleased to receive a charitable gift for $50,000 by an anonymous donor. The organization plans to utilize the extraordinary gift to offset fundraising losses and continue developing plans for its onsite, publicly accessible spay and neuter clinic.

North Carolina Family Adventures have Roots in Wyoming and BDAR

North Carolina Family Adventures have Roots in Wyoming and BDAR

Last year, we completed our challenge to visit all NC State Parks and hike over 100 miles, beginning in January of 2019, and ending in November of the same year. We began our fostering experience [at BDAR] with Flint, a playful Rottweiler who was one of the sweetest, most personable dogs we took care of.

These two seemingly unrelated passions came together in a very unexpected way.  We were searching for a new challenge for 2020; something to push the boundaries of what we had accomplished, while remaining realistic from both a time and budget perspective.  We had also lamented on several occasions that we were not in a good position to foster again full-time.

Laramie County Cat Crisis

Laramie County Cat Crisis

Poppie was abandoned on our doorstep early in the morning. A young female black and white cat with adorable nose freckles and soft, longish fur, Poppie had obviously recently nursed kittens as well. There was no note and no later phone call. We’ll never know where she came from. Though it may seem callous to some that she was just left here anonymously, the fact is she fared far better than most cats in her situation.

Amos' Story

Amos' Story

This boy came to BDAR from an overcrowded shelter in Wyoming. After less than one day in his new foster home, he started exhibiting some concerning signs that something was medically wrong. After an immediate trip to the vet, he was diagnosed with Parvovirus. Parvo, for short, is a highly contagious disease that can be vaccinated against. At BDAR, we vaccinate all puppies and dogs, but this doesn't mean we don't see a parvo case every once in awhile.

Lucille's Story

Lucille's Story

Surrendered to an overcrowded shelter when her owner fell ill, Lucille was left alone and scared. She needed a savior. BDAR, although already stretched thin, agreed to take Lucille into our program. How could we say no to that face? She arrived off transport, shy but sweet, and we all fell instantly in love with her.

Winnie's Story

Winnie's Story

In mid-February, we were contacted about a pregnant pit bull in a KS shelter. Even under the best of circumstances, pregnancy and whelping are risky times in the lives of mother dogs and their offspring. But in shelters, the risk is even greater due to stress and the risk of disease exposure. Foster homes willing and able to provide care for litters of puppies are few and far between, but we are blessed to have one local family who routinely does this for us. Winnie, the mom dog, came to BDAR and spent about two weeks in foster care before she went into labor. All seemed to be well and she delivered 8 fat, blocky-headed babies. Hours later though, things took a scary and potentially deadly turn.

When Love is Not Enough

When Love is Not Enough

It’s not the thing anyone really wants to hear (or read) about, euthanasia. It’s definitely not the thing I want to be doing at any time on any day. So when I found myself sitting in the vet’s office yesterday afternoon, cradling a terrified little red dog in my arms while we quickly and painlessly ended her life, it really wasn’t a good day.

Emilio's Story

When we moved into our new building last July, we knew we'd need to make an effort to get to know and trust the neighbors. But what we couldn't have predicted was that one of those neighbors would be a filthy, matted black cat! Soon after we began operating out of our 9th St. location, our staff began to notice the cat sitting on the front porch of a nearby abandoned home. The house was boarded up, but it was lifted off its foundation, and the cat had found a hole through which to enter and stay warm. Nearly every morning, the cat was spotted sunning himself on the dilapidated front porch. But despite our efforts to coax him in, he was having none of our advances.

Isabelle's Story

Isabelle's Story

Sweet, petite Isabelle came to BDAR from a partner shelter in mid December along with her four squishy two week old puppies. Isabelle was a wonderful mother, and did a fabulous job making those babies even squishier before they were old enough to be adopted to their own forever homes.

About Reputable Breeders, Backyard Breeders, Puppy Mills/Commercial Pet Stores

As a rescue that deals exclusively with rescuing dogs after they have been in a home and/or animal shelter, we often see that many people still have confusion surrounding obtaining a pet. While most of us want to make a responsible decision, many still don’t fully understand the implications and complications about where your pet comes from. Often, our desire to “help” or “save” an animal in a store can cause more harm than good. We have come a long way since the “How Much is that Doggie in the Window,” but we are still here to help you understand the differences in how where your pet comes from can impact their long-term well-being, and the well-being of others.

Trapper's Story

Trapper's Story

In January of 2015, a skinny, sad, 6 year old male hound was transferred to BDAR from a rural WY shelter. His past before that was unclear, but what we did know was that the dog, who we called Trapper, had had a rough life. Shy and malnourished, with a dull coat and and a faraway look, Trapper came to BDAR in the hope that the individualized care provided by a loving foster home would bring out the beauty and potential in him, and lead to a loving, forever home.
